Authentic Christ-Centered Worship, Study, and Sometimes Just Plain Silliness!

Advent

Advent literally means "coming." During this four week season right before Christmas we prepare for the first coming of Christ into the world (past), we look towards His second coming at the end of the world (future), and we celebrate His presence in the here and now (present), as He comes to us today through Word and Sacrament. As we wait for the day of Christ's birth we are like the faithful Old Testament saints who longed so eagerly for the promised Savior to come. During this season, there is much joy and gladness in our hearts. But there is also regret and shame because the Son of God would not have had to humble Himself in this way if it were not for our sinfulness. The color of Advent is violet to express this mourning and sorrow over our sin. Since Advent is a highly penitential season, it historically has always also been a catechetical one.
